JCG is the first secondary school in Jersey to be awarded the Silver Rights Respecting School Award by Unicef UK. Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school. Silver is given to schools that make excellent progress towards embedding the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into its ethos, policy and curriculum. The College is promoting knowledge and understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child throughout its community and it is having a positive impact on the actions of young people and staff. A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. Miss Toni Rollo, Vice Principal, who has been leading the College’s Rights Respecting work, stated, ‘The Rights Respecting School Award programme is something that the Minister for Education and the Children’s Commissioner have really promoted for the benefit of Jersey’s young people.   I am so pleased to see our students become rights respecting global citizens and strong and passionate advocates for fairness and children’s rights, both locally and globally.’ To achieve the award, the College ensured that teaching and learning about the concept and knowledge of rights especially the UNCRC is integrated and embedded into the culture and curriculum of the College. In addition, the College recently dedicated a week of events to celebrate the 30^th anniversary of the UNCRC including an international food fair and student-led talks on the importance of activism.
