Wednesday 17th June Update - Plans for welcoming back all years
Dear Parents and Students, Update as of 14.14 on Wednesday 17 June 2020 I hope you and your loved ones are well. The main information in this update refers to the wider reopening of schools. What do we know?
- The Education Minister announced at 3pm today that all schools can, from Monday 22 June, welcome back more students. I have attached the Press Release for your information. This is excellent news and we are very excited. While it will be great to be back we do need to do it safely.
- The key message is from Monday and within College, social distancing for all is reduced to 1m with the need to hand sanitise, wipe down of desks and use of one way systems to remain in place.
- The plan for next week for students is as follows:
-
- Monday:
- Years 7 and 10 from 8.30 - 3.00pm (5 lessons plus sporting activity)
- Year 12 from 11 - 1pm
- Tuesday:
- Year 8 and 9 from 8.30 - 3.00pm (5 lessons plus sporting activity)
- Year 12 from 11 - 1pm
- Weds:
- Year 12 from 9 - 2pm
- Year 12 and 13 from 1 - 2pm for the much awaited and anticipated SSLT handover (more information on this will be sent to Year 12 and 13 students separately). Please also see below.
- Thursday:
- Years 7 and 10 from 8.30 - 3.00pm (5 lessons plus sporting activity)
- Year 12 from 11 - 1pm
- Friday:
- Year 8 and 9 from 8.30 - 3.00pm (5 lessons plus sporting activity)

-
- Each week, up to the end of term, is going to be different to allow such things as Year 6 transition (2 & 3 July) and Year 11 Sixth Form induction, which is now taking place on 8 July. We will publish the timetables for each week as soon as we are able.
- Students will be sent their timetables later this week. Please go through this with your daughter. They will require their books and a device. Lunch will be available from the Dome.
- I have also attached the updated 'JCG Guidance for a Safe Return'. Please ensure you go through this carefully with your daughter as it contains essential information. Some Y10 and Y12 students arrived back over the past two weeks not having read it which wasn't helpful.
- From Monday, online lessons need only continue if the teacher is unable to attend. Therefore, online lessons will cease for the vast majority of students. Tasks (such as planning or follow up) for students to complete between lessons will be placed on SMHW. We do have some students who cannot return from next week. For these students it is essential there is provision for them. We do not want to exacerbate their sense of isolation. Therefore, please let us know if your daughter cannot return and ask her to allow a friend to use her device to allow online interaction for her in the lesson.
- On Wednesday, we will be delighted to welcome Year 12 students in for lessons between 0900 and 1230. As this will include all subject blocks, your daughter should expect to have a period of independent study for which she should bring work to complete. Full timetables will follow. After lunch, we are excited to be able to invite Year 12 students to join with Year 13, between 1300 and 1400, for the announcement of the new Senior Student Leadership Team. The applicants have spent a long time anticipating this day, and it was deeply important that we wait until this significant celebration could be marked in person, as a Sixth Form community. This is planned to take place on the Astro pitch to ensure safe distancing.
Sixth Form Induction Day - 8th July
- Previous communication indicated that we would hold our Sixth Form Induction Day on Tuesday 30th June. The ongoing challenges and constrains of the pandemic have necessitated rescheduling for Wednesday 8th July. In making this decision, we have sought to balance the need to hold various events whilst also allowing access to the College for as many students as possible during this period of phased return. Despite this delay, we are delighted to say that the event can take place in person and in College as planned. The induction process will be staggered, for two groups of students, with your daughter being asked to attend between 0830 and 1315 or 1045 and 1530: more information will follow next week.
While many students, parents and staff will be excited and delighted to be returning, I also know others will be anxious and a little apprehensive. It is strange being in College but it also feels better and better the longer we are here. We will do our very best for each and every member of our community. We are not returning to a normal College environment. We have never had to integrate students back before. Therefore please be patient as we manage the next few weeks. The College community has been incredible in adapting over the past three months. We will continue to do the same over the next one. Take care.
